When the Good Suffer: A Message of Comfort and Hope
Human hearts are often bruised, we have minds that are searching, and spirits that are weary at times. There’s a question that echoes in our souls when life doesn’t seem fair—when illness, loss, or heartbreak knocks on the doors of those who’ve lived kindly, loved deeply, are devoted, mindful and serve humbly.
Why do bad things happen to good people? It’s a question as old as time and as personal as our latest sorrow. It’s asked in hospital rooms and whispered at gravesides. It’s pondered in the quiet watches of the night.
We can gain another perspective on suffering, loss and heartbreak as we remember the scripture and the nature of God.
Scriptures:
John 9:2–3 – Jesus reframes suffering not as punishment but as a place where God’s work is revealed.
Psalm 34:18 – God is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Quotes:
David R. Hawkins: “Suffering is due to resistance…”
Tara Brach: “The wound is the place where the light enters.”
Richard Rohr: “If we do not transform our pain, we will most assuredly transmit it.”
